Nicolet Area Technical College Learning Center (NATC) in Eagle River is now open for adult basic education. The NATC Learning Center is located in the Olson Memorial Library located at 203 N. Main St. The free service offers instruction to people preparing to attend college, building academic skills for the workplace, earning a general equivalency diploma (GED) or high school equivalency degree (HSED). Artist of the Month: Debra Ketchum Jircik. Poetry of Earth: nature, patterns and words. I am captivated by the physical and tactile processes of creating in clay and handmade paper.   The work in this show is inspired by my love of texture, pattern and the magic of the natural world.  I am not interested in depicting it literally but rather capturing a feeling or glimpsing its qualities as I experience them. 

I have chosen to work primarily with the natural color of the plant fibers themselves, be they flax, abaca, cattail or else the color of the fabrics I recycle, such as the beautiful blues from denim jeans.  The minimal additional color I have used is through embedded fabrics, plants, natural dyes, and earth pigments.   I think of the gathering of materials as being as important a part of the process as is the creation of the art work.

In commemoration of Earth Day and National Poetry Month, I have chosen to share with everyone some nature poets who are very inspiring to me and  who I feel kinship with as they so beautifully express in words what I try to do with  my art materials.
